Noted with different levels of description and detail in Brunius (1850) Romilly Allen (1906), Tynell (1913-1921), Roosval (1918), Rydbeck (1936), Carlsson (1970), Nordström (1984), and others. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900707F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the last quarter of the 12th century by the Tove workshop; the SHM entry notes that there are significant similarities with the font at Gumlösa, which is signed by Tove. On-site notes: the font is extremely well carved and has remains of paint and colour on several parts. There is a central drainage hole in the bowl. An arcade frames the upper part of the bowl and it sometimes has the support of column, but there is no consistant use of columns to frame individual images or episodes. This pictorial program shows the martyrdom of St.Thomas Beckett at the altar [NB: Beckett was murdered in 1170]. The base images are identified by Ljungman (1993: 7) as: "a ram, a man opening his mouth with his hands, an indistinct lion, a woman giving suck to two winged dragons. Between the figures, plant ornaments". The Latin inscription "Rex Henricus" identifies the seated king as he gives the order to execute Beckett to a soldier standing next to him; the inscription is mentioned in Corelli (2001: 298) after Tynell (1913-1921). No cover present. The baptismal dish is made of gilded copper. The source for the stone of the font, claimed to have been quarried in Scania, has been debated; Rydbeck says Ryesdalssandsten or it might have come from Hoor - both in Scania. ) A communication from Annette Landen (e-mail of September 2023 to HST) suggested we use "Scanian sandstone" as it need to be re-evaluated.
