Church Notes: Red brick church. Appears in SCRIPTORE RERUM DANICARUM MEDII AEVI… (edidit, Jacobus Langebeck, V. Hafniae, 1883, p. 378). It mentions the presence of St.Thomas Becket relics in Gumlosa. Also the holy shrine of Trono Church in Halsingland. See Aron Andersson, "Thomas Beckets skrin I Trono kyrka" HALSINGERUNOR - EN HEMBYGDSBOK (1951. Lund. Pp. 65-81). He dates the Gumlosa font to 1220 [NB: date of the font to be rechecked]
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Brunius (1850). Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921), who gives all the inscriptions and earlier references to Brunius, Hildebrand, etc. Roosval (1918: 124) dated ithe font to 1191 A.D., probably on the evidence of the consecration of the church. Described and illustrated in Rydbeck (1936) in the context of her chapter on the Tove master, whose inscription appears on this font. Andersson (1951) dates it to ca. 1220. Carlsson (1976: 126) dates it 1191-1192 probably after Roosval, and describes the font thus: "The font is a signed example from the production of Tove who was a local stonemaster. Its base has four lions which seem to carry the bowl on their necks by intermediary abstract elements which occur frequently in Scandinavian fonts. They appear always in positions where it is logical to interpret them as a sort of springs giving elastic support for the bowl. The lions all have prey in their jaws; in two cases snakes, in another a catlike animal and in the forth a hoofed animal." Noted in Nordström (1976), (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900804F1] where it is remarked that of all the fonts attributed to the Tove master/workshop this is the only one that bears his/its name; the SHM dates he font to the last quarter of the 12th century [cf. supra] probably on account of the consecration date of the church here. On-site notes [visits in 1997 and 2002]: the font is in excellent condition and has a drain system seen in a few other such fonts: the hole at the centre of bottom of the basin well leads across to a large opening on the upper ring of the base; the basin sides display an ornate arcade of round arches -the arches have inscriptions on them- that contain scenes of the childhood of Christ and of his baptism, all below a rope motif that decorates the upper rim side; the base is round, with a broad roll moulding atop, a scalloped pattern below, and animals with prey set at 90-degree angles on the base sides. No cover present.
