Additional Comments: recycled font: this font once stood in a garden close to the church - there is an old painting of it in the church. The font is badly worn due to the years of exposure to the elements and its use as planter. Irregular design. Serpents heads. This does not look totally like a Sighraf font - could this be a Majestatis workshop? -- [NB: church first visited by HST 1993; B&W photos taken then -- visited 15 May 2023: digital photographs taken]

On-site notes: this font once stood in a garden close to the church - there is an old painting of it in the church -- figures in the spandrels of the basin: Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Dream of the Magi, Flight to Egypt -- the base has four monster or animal heads; a short modern plinth has been added to the base. The Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen has a painting by Jörgen Roed "Haven med den gamle døbefont" [=Garden with the old baptismal font] in which the font is depicted as a planter with the Annunciation scene facing the viewer; the picture has a male figure up on a ladder picking fruit from a tree while a maid extends her apron to gather the pickings. Mogens Nikjær (ICO, 3(1983): 1-7) makes an interesting interpretation of the painting in relation to the iconography of the Annunciation and claims that Roed, the painter, renders "a metaphorical depiction of an erotic scene, interpreted in Christian terms as an Annunciation." (ibid., p. 7). The actual font, now [July 1997] located inside the church, is badly worn due to the years of exposure to the elements and its use as planter. There are obvious similarities between it and the Eke font on Gotland. The main ornamentation consists of scenes from the childhood of Christ and one of the Passion. There are also rays of light which radiate from the manger to the Virgin. There are seraphim in the spandrels. Though attributed to the Sighraf workshop, it resembles some of the fonts of the Majestatis workshop. It has been dated to the 12th and 13th century depending on the source..
