Noted and illustrated in Brunius (1850). Illustrated in Hildebrand (1907: figs. 115-118 and 230). Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921) who remarks on the similarities with the font at Östra Hoby and notes its presence at the 1867 Paris Exhibition; Tynell refers to Brunius and Hildevrabd [cf. supra]. Roosval (1917) was of the opinion that the iconographic program on this font represents the legend of St. Stanislaus, while, fifty years later, Torkel Eriksson (1968) argued that it represents the legend of St. Fridolin. Roosval (1917) explains that, shortly before the production of the font, ca. 1185, Sweden had a Polish queen, Richiza, who was married to the Swedish King Sverker the Elder [who died in 1156]. The legend is as follows: the bishop St. Stanislaus had brought a landed estate for the Church from a nobleman who, however, suddenly passed away a short time later. Between his heirs and the bishop a controversy arose over the possession. King Boleslav II the Bold (1039-1081) - the bishop promised to bring the dead man into court to swear as witness of earlier transactions. The Tryde font shows the dead man, supported by another and being raised from coffin. The bishop was later martyred by the King. According to Eriksson (1968), however, it is the Fridolin legend, about an Irishman who lived in the 6th century and worked to promote the cult of St. Hilarius, first in Poitiers and later in different places, especially in Sackingen on the upper Rhine. According to this interpretation, the first scene represented on the font shows in the middle St. Hilarius of Poitiers with his ponitifical attributes and glory. The man on the left is crowned and has a sword in his hand. He is King Chlodwig. The man on the right is Fridolin raising up the man Ursus from his grave. He had bequeathed a landed estate to Fridolin and his monastery, which after his death was denied by his brother Landolf. To settle the dispute, count Baldeberch sent for Fridolin and Landolf to come to his court. That very day Fridolin want to the grave and ordered the dead Ursus to stand up. In the third and last scene, Fridolin, with his mitre on his head, has taken the dead Ursus with him into the court. Landolf is falling and the Count is bowing his head and giving a crozier to Fridolin. Both legends are similar and intended as a parallel to the Raising of Lazarus, as on the Viklau font. Jan Svanberg (1998: 47-65) picks up the trail thirty years later and "after a careful examination the author gives his support to Roosval's interpretation of the basin reliefs" and "enlarges his study to comprise the two remaining relief scenes, on the mouldered foot of the font. [...] One of them seems to picture how King Boleslaus, surnamed largus, the generous, according to his legend gave the chief example of his liberality by giving a poor clerk so many articles of value that the latter could not carry them all away [...]. The other relief on the foot shows the same king, kneeling in a house while the devil seems to be losing but has not yet let go of him", which -Svanberg argues- refers to the moment when, after the murder of bishop Stanislaus in 1079, Boleslaus enters the abbey of Ossyak to do penance for his sins until his death two years later. Svanberg also argues that the coins which Boleslaus had struck for his 1076 coronation portrayed the king in a similar way as the Tryde font, and that the stonemason who ornamented the font may have used the very coins as model. "To all appearances," Svanberg adds, "his [the stonemason's] employers were the then king of Denmark Waldemar I and his queen Sophia, who had descended from Boleslaus' family" (ibid., p. 65). On-site notes: the basin has a bucket-shape form, almost cylindrical, but with four very prominent pairs of figures located on the basin, at 90-degree angles, and reaching past the basin lower edge onto the centre ring of the upper base; in between these pairs of figures, four low-relief scenes. The ornamentation on the underbowl, in contrast with the complexity of the one on the basin and on the centre ring, is rather crude, scenes of a lion attacking a deer and a wolf or other canine attacking a pig. The base has three large prominent heads: a lion (? - very eroded), a human, male, with long hair, and a bear (?) with prey in its jaws (this prey's tail is curled up on the scene to the left and either links with, or becomes, a plant). NB: the base is much more worn than the bowl; very noticeably so - why? Is this not the original base? [cf. supra for Svanberg's argument about two scenes on the base] And if it is, was it separated from the basin? [which would account for the difference in erosion levels]. Künstler (1973: 313) points out thet "the treatment of folds and the execution of the details are reminiscent of metalwork". Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900718F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Majestatis; the SHM notes the presence of traces of oil paint on it and adds that the claims of representation of the legend of Stanislav on it may be exagerated. [cf. ImagesArea and FieldNotes for a full description of the programme on this font].
