LBS02: design element - architectural - church - Romanesque church
Scene Description: on the side between the seated tonsured monk and the seated cleric (?) holding a scroll -- North view of a Romanesque church building.of four elements: the east apse on the left, then [L->R] the chancel volume with the animal head on the top left end; next right is the volume of the nave topped with the cross; at the extreme right, the western tower. The two entrances on the north side are probably an error or liberty of the designer of the font, as such entrances [one to the chancel, another to the nave] normally occur on the south side in Gotland church buildings, not on the north side, where, if there is an entrance at all, is usually a single one. Notice the arcade of three round arch-heads decorated with beaded-tape pattern above the church building.

Noted and illustrated in Hildebrand (1864-1880). [cf. Bibliography for details of this font in other sources]. Described and illustrated by Maja Lundquist in Roosval (1917). Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 951011F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone by Sigraf in the last quarter of the 12th century, with full identification of the basin scenes and the base figures. Noted and illustrated in Ullén & Ljungstedt (2003) as a baptismal font made of Gotland sandstone and identify the scenes on the basin sides. On-site notes [visits in: 1989, 1993, 1997, 2012]: cylindrical mounted font; figural iconography on basin sides and base; shallow relief; fair shape; this font, originally from the parish church at Tingstad in Östergötland, was already reported at the Statens Historiska Museum by Roosval in 1913. The basin has eight scenes, seven of which are part of the Childhood of Christ cycle; the eighth scene shows St. Michael slaying the dragon [L->R]: Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Christ First Bath, Arrival of the Magi, Adoration of the Magi with Madonna and Child, Dream of the Magi, slaying of the dragon. The underbowl is decorated with two geometric patterns. The base has four corner figures: a cleric with his head broken off, probably a bishop; a tonsured monk; a cleric (?) wearing a cope and holding a scroll; St. Peter charged with two keys. Two of the sides of the base are decorated with scallop-like pattern; another side has a full Romanesque church building, although the doors into the nave and chancel appear to have been transposed to the north side; the fourth side has beautifully rendered interlace.
