Church Notes: present church of 1770s replaced cruciform medieval church in the pilgrimage route; later church, very large and beautiful colours of blues and gold ornament the altar.
Noted and illustrated in Roosval (1918). In Cornell (1918). In Nordström (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900602F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the last quarter of the 12th century by Sigraf. On-site notes: the font, especially the basin, is in a terrible state of conservation; exposure to the elements has eroded the carvings and the stone has undergone some chemical process that has left its surface pockmarked; we do not know whether this deterioration has [been] stopped or is on-going, as the photographs taken by Roosval ca. 1919 already show the terrible erosion of the stone; the corner figures of the base are also eroded and two of them are badly damaged, with the heads and parts of the bodies missing; by contrast the scalloped pattern of the underbowl has survived practically intact, which supports the idea that most of the erosion has been due to prolonged exposure to the elements; there is no evidence of cover hardware at the upper rim, which would suggest a cover was placed on it with out anchoring or lock; the inner basin has a central drain hole. The font is located now [1997+ ] in the southeast corner but earlier photographs [cf. ImagesArea] show it across the nave by the pulpit.
