Additional Comments: painted font basin in 1707; base not painted -- There isn't really a pictorial narrative program on this font. The depiction of the Flight to Egypt on the upper bowl, surrounded by the 12 apostles, can only be described as one scene with a theological intent or meaning. The underside of the font has large circular, spirals of acanthus vine encircling the bowl. The centre ring is twisted. There are four heads on the base, the faces of four men. Scenes or rather symbolic motifs ornament the spaces between them. Nordstrom says there is a stag eating a snake - this is difficult to see. There is a stag but no snake in its mouth - unless it has been worn off. The images on the base appear to be episodes of a hunting story.

In Roosval (1918). In Strömbom (1942). Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. I, hft. 3: 310-315) as a limestone cylindrical mounted baptismal font from the Calcarius workshop and dated to ca. 1200 by Roosval; the cylindrical basin has a scene of the Flight to Egypt and figures of the Apostles above a lower rim with rope motif. The base is cylindrical with four protruding heads and several scenes between the heads. Listed in Drake (2002: 183) as a baptismal font of the Calcarius workshop. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910503F3] as a baptismal font made of limestone in the first half of the 13th century by Calcarius; painted 1707. On-site notes: cylindrical mounted font by the Calcarius master of Gotland. The basin is painted in bright colours and contains a scene of the Flight to Egypt; also the 12 Apostles, all of them represented as standing haloed figures; some are identified by their names carved on the rim above; Peter holds a large key; several hold boks. The cylindrical base is, like many of these Scandinavian fonts adorned with an upper ring and protruding heads; between the heads can be found: a man walking a dog on a leash; above them, two animals personified, the one on the left wearing a hood and holding a staff, sit face to face; a dog biting a stag; a tree of life with two birds, a stag and a winged monster (?). The font is raised on a round modern plinth. No cover present.
