human figure - male - seated - with raised hand or with sword - accompanied by two military figures
Scene Description: There are nine circles ornamenting the upper bowl. Two, at opposite sides of the bowl, show a single figure, enthroned with raised hand or sword. These two medallion-like images are surrounded on either side by what appears to be double figures in vairous standing postures, holding often swords. Strong military presence to the images - could this be related to the same presence in the Hegwaldr fonts….is there a military connection? Teutonic order?

In Roosval (1918). Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. VII, hft. 1: 33-4, 66-70, 91) as a sandstone hemispheric baptismal font of the late 12th century; the basin, unfortunately very worn now due to its being exposed to the elements for many years, has large circles in which human figures appear, mostly standing, some sitting. The base, also in sandstone, has an upper ring moulding and four protruding lion heads devouring snakes; the lower volume of the base is also round but made of limestone. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910823F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the mid-12th century; the SHM entry notes Fåhraeus' attribution to the Majestatisgruppen but the entry gives Hegvald as the 'Upphovsman'. On-site notes: the font is badly worn and only a general description is possible: the older parts, basin and upper base, stand on two later plinths from what appears to be the 13th century(?); there is a central drainage hole in the upper bowl. There are four heads ornamenting the base. The underside of the bowl is plain and unadorned. The bowl has been scraped of all paint and colour. There are two indentations inside the bowl which indicate that a lid once covered the top of the bowl. There is no font cover present now but a post-1923 photograph [cf. ImagesArea] shows a round and flat plain cover on the font. The font has been moved around the church interior through the years; from its likely original position near the entrance, the font is shown ca. 1923 [cf. ImagesArea] in the northeast corner of the nave but in 1957 it shows back at the west end, centre aisle.
