Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. VII, hft. 3: 56ff) as a grey sandstone baptismal font attributed to the Majestatis workshop of Gotland; the basin is cylindrical and its sides are carved with six round arches; the spandrels of the arches are ornamented with large leaf motifs except one which has a triquetra; the capitals of the columns simulate lion (?) heads and the columns themselves are ornamented with torsade pattern; the bases are plain. The arches contain six scenes from the childhood of Christ [L->R, starting on the east side]; 1)Visitation: the two haloed women embrace; 2)Joseph's Frist Dream: Joseph sleeps sitting on a stone; a large round shape above Joseph; 3)Nativity: Mary in bed; swadled Child in a rectangular manger projecting rays on Mary's bed; mule and ox above, as well as a 8-point star; 4)Annunciation to the Shepherds: three shepherds, one sitting, wearing hooded clothing; accompanied by one small bovine; 5)Adoration of the Magi: the tree crowned figures walk towards the right carrying gifts; 8-point star above; Madonna and Child enthroned, both figures haloed; the Child's right hand is raised in benediction; curtains on both sides of the bench-like back-less throne; 6)Annunciation: Gabriel, Mary, both haloed, and the dove; Mary holds a book in the left hand and there is a lectern (?) to her left. The base has four large protruding heads: three lion's and one human; the lions bite snakes bodies, while the human has both hands to its mouth. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910818F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Majestatis.
On-site notes: brown/red paint evident; excellent condition other than the greyish wash that covers the font; plinth is a later addition; very detailed features, spacious design and composition; no crowding; fine workmanship; three animals each with a snake in their mouths whose tails are interwined into designs between the heads on the base; one head is a man, who has his hands holding his mouth closed. The centre ring around the upper part of the base is a plaited braid. There are some incisions or marks; damage to the upper rim and inner basin, possibly where the cover hardware was. There is a round edging on the lower edge of the upper bowl but not around the rim, as is the case with the Grotlingbo font by Sighraf.
