Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. I, hft. 3: 346-349) as a a sandstone cylindrical mounted baptismal font from the Majestatis workshop and dated to the mid-12th century by Roosval; on the basin sides, a Majestas Domini in a mandorla with inscription, and scenes of the childhood of Christ whitout any separating frames or arches; there are arches on the underbowl containing the symbols of the Evangelists and other motifs. The stem of the base, sandstone, like the basin, has four lion heads with snakes in their mouths; between the heads, tangled motifs with the snake bodies; the lower base or plinth is round, of a later date and made of limestone. Noted in Stenström (1975). In Nordström (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910505F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Majestatis; the SHM suggests the upper base is later than the basin. On-site notes: the pictorial program moves from the left to the right; there are no arches or dividers between the scenes; the scenes are carved around the sides of the bowl. There are seven arches on the underside of the bowl showing various motifs and symbols. The base has the four heads typical of this workshop [cf. ImagesArea and FieldNotes for a full description of the programme on the font]. There is an older lower-base that matches the basin, and a limestone plinth under it carved as a base for columns - 13th century? A photograph of this font was chosen to illustrate the entry "fonts baptismaux" in the Zodiaque's Glossaire des termes techniques... (1965)
