Scene Description: notice a)the remains of a braid on the centre ring; b)a knotted string (?); c)the rough-cut sides to right and left. Even though the base appears now to be quite similar to the later bases on the Paradise and Mussel fonts of Gotland, it is quite likely that this was an earlier base with four heads at 90-degree angles, a common design on the island used by several of the workshops; the knot is probably all that remains of the snakes that slither their way between the heads and ther open surfaces of the base. The spaces between the heads would have had motifs or symbols on them, either painted or carved, or both, as in this case of several snakes forming a cross interlace

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 67, 75, 77-80): cylindrical mounted baptismal font dated by Roosval et al. to 1167 and attributed to the Majestatis workshop. Described and illustrated also in Fåhraeus (1974: 42, etc.). The basin sides are ornamented with scenes from the childhood of Christ and a Majestas Domini in a mandorla that contains an inscription [cf. Inscription area]. Patterned underbowl. Head motif at the ring moulding of the base. In Nordström (1965). In Stenström (1975). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910510F2] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Majestatis bearing the inscription "+ MAGNV : NOME : DOMINI : EMANVE : A O + "; the SHM entry suggests that the damaged panel contained the Massacre of the Innocent scene; the present colours are likely to match those originally painted on the font. On-site notes: the back part of the basin, which probably had the full scene of the Adoration of the Shepherds [and, perhaps, a Massacre of the Innocent to the left of the seated Herod?]; that part was cut off to make the font fit against the chancel arch, where it was still placed circa 1942 when the SK documentation was prepared; at that time the font was located against the north side of the chancel arch and showed no trace of paint. The font would have been originally located in the west end, by the south door, where it now [1997-2012] stands, now fully painted; it is in fair condition except for the alterations noted above. The pictorial program moves from the left to the right. The Christ in Majesty is the centre image where all meet. The heads on the base have been removed, but at least one has been painted (?) on the upper ring of the base. Rope motif adorns the upper rim of the bowl and the lower edge, and a braid ornaments the centre ring on the base. Also, a braid encircles the underside of the bowl. The plinth raises the font but is too narrow for standing.
