INFORMATION
Font ID: 00035MAS
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Date Visited: 1997-05-22; 2023-05-28
Font Date: ca. 1160? [Roosval]
Font Century and Period/Style: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Byzantios
Church / Chapel Name: Mästerby kyrka
Font Location in Church: Inside the church. Not in its original position; now against the north side of the church immediately before the apse
Church Notes: The church itself retains some of its 13th century wall murals, especially, the Christ in Majesty in the apse and the surrounding symbols for the Apostles and the seated Apostles below; their iconography points to an earlier 12th-13th century date.. There are later, 15th-century, paintings by the Passionmaster.
Church Address: Mästerby kyrka, 622 32 Gotlands Tofta, Sweden
Site Location: Gotland, Gotlands län, Sweden, Europe
Directions to Site: Located off local road I579, W of county road 142, 10 km ESE of Tofta, about 20 km S of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift -- Sanda, Västergarn och Mästerby församling
Historical Region: Gotlands södra härad, Banda ting, Gotlands län
Additional Comments: damaged font: painted with a thick coat of dark paint that makes it very difficult to discern the iconography under it. There may have been painted motifs between the four heads on the base, but there is currently no evidence of this. The same may have been true for the underside of the upper bowl. Again, the heavy paint that covers the font has erased all such evidence. The four heads are the typical ones used for this workshop: ram, two unknown beasts and one man with a mustache.

Described in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 186) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font attributed to the Byzantios workshop and dated to circa 1160 by Roosval; the basin sides are ornamented with scenes from the childhood of Christ, Samson, St. Michael, the Eucharist, etc. Chamfered underbowl also octagonal. Round pedestal base with four protruding heads; tall lower base. A photograph in SK: Gotland (ibid., pl. 206 on p. 184) shows a partial view of the font, just east of the chancel arch, on the north side; it has a cover on: octagonal box-like, with little spindle-shaped finials at the angles and a larger one at the centre. In Nordström (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910809F2] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Byzantios. On-site notes: the font has been painted a blackish/green colour that makes it difficult to decipher the iconographic program underneath; the programme moves L-->R; if we start on the south side: St. George - Etymasia - Nativity? - Annunciation to Shepherds - Heavenly Mass - Animal with tree - Annunciation to Mary. The base has the four heads, human and animal. The lower plinth is high, and cut as an extention of the base; a thin round plinth with drainage plate is under the upper one.
