Country Name: Sweden
Location: Gotland, Gotlands län
Directions to Site: Located off (E) county road 140, just E of Tofta Strand, on the W coast of the island, 25 km SW of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift -- Eskelhem-Tofta församling
Historical Region: Gotlands södra härad, Banda ting, Gotlands län
Font Location in Church: In the centre of the church, at the W end of the nave, opposite the south doorway
Date: ca. 1150-1180?
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Semi-Byzantios (Gotland)
Cognate Fonts: Alskog, Hamra, Jumkil, Linde
Church Notes: The church has a double nave, centre column divides it into two parts. The church has a "Romanesque Gotland Bench" as shown on the Grotlingbo font which is used by the seated figures. The church has a large square apse.
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 234-236) as a sandstone cylindrical mounted baptismal font attributed to the anonymous master Semi-Byzantios and dated circa 1150-1180 by Roosval; the sides of the basin are ornamented with an arcade of round arches containing scenes from the childhood of Christ (Annunciation Flight to Egypt, Nativity, etc.). The central ring of the base is a thick braided rope motif; there are four heads at 90-degree angles on the stem of the base; the font stands on an early-Gothic limestone plinth ornamented with foliage. In Stenström (1975. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910810F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Semi-Byzantios. On-site notes [three visits by BSI 1997, 2002, 2012]: this font appears to be almost identical to other Semi-Byzantios fonts; the pictorial narrative moves from the right to the left; the carving style is less refined and more animated. It is in good condition with less paint than the Alskog font, but the stone itself has worn irregularly through chemical erosion; there are two plinths in place; the upper is round and follows the outline of the round base; the lower plinth is square and protrudes considerably; it is ornamented with acanthus motifs; it appears to be early-Gothic and probably never meant to be part of the font; paint has been scraped off the font.
