Scene Description: the arch contains two quadrupeds engaged in a fight, the lower one with its head turned in the act of throwing the other one over its back; this impression is enhanced by massive neck of the lower animal. The hooves of the upper animal are easily distinguishable, but the legs of the lower animal appear to be ending in claws making it more likely a lion. in the lower left corner of the scene growns an acanthus plant.

Scene Description: this arch is affected by the damage on the side, which makes the identification of the scene uncertain. A deer passant to the left is being attacked by a grffing standing on top of the deer back; the hindquarters of both animals are part of the damaged area so the identification of the Griffin is tentative, although it does appear to have a quadruped body; there is a third animal, a smaller one, beneath the body of the deer; it is either a fawn suckling at his mother, or a dog attacking the deer, most likely the former, given the shape of the animal and its position in relation to the larger quadruped

Church Notes: evidence of 12thC foundations uncovered in 1939 excavation; present church 13thC; modified 14thC, 19thC ARCHIVAL RECORDS at the Gotlands Museum [formerly Fornsalen Museum] (Visby, Gotland): early photos of the Öja church in the file indicate that there was a depiction of a stone cutter carved on the capitals along the right side of the North portal in the tower; he held a hammer and measuring device [caliper?] for calculating the circumference; the portal is dated to ca. 1350, and is made of limestone. This figure has been attributed as St. Eligius (patron saint of smiths). In his right hand he holds a raised hammer and in his left a pair of things which clasp a horseshoe... a/p restoration notes in the archival files. In which case, the previous note is incorrect - although, I have not seen this carving. He is carved from red marble - two blocks

Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921: 55 and pl. XXI: 3-4): baptismal font made of Gotland limestone; the roughly cylindrical basin has a band of braid decoration around the upper side; the rest of the sides are covered with a number of scenes involving humans and animals. or pairs of animals; some of the scenes are obviously symbiotic or ludic among the parts, but others are confrontational: standing humanoid beast, aspis rider, fantastic animal/ creature, griffin on lion, lion and deer fighting, dog riding a lion, etc. Tynell (ibid.) reported the font in the church and showed the basin with a plain wooden cover. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910502F1] a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Byzantios. On-site notes: this font is now [July 1997 and Aug. 2012] located in the Gotlands Museum [formerly Fornsalen museum], Visby, Gotland. The basin is from Öja but the base on which it is displayed is originally from the church at Levide. Although the basin is worn and damaged, it appears to be a work of the Byzantios workshop; it was broken into two parts and has been stapled back together; there is an odd hole in the underbowl beneath one of the zoomachia scenes; was it used as a side drain? The plinth has a drainage plate carved in it. Lid hinge holes evident in basin. [Öja site and Visby Museum re-visited 28 May 2018 and 312 May 2023]
