Country Name: Sweden

Directions to Site: Located off (W) county road 142, 6 km S of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift -- Stenkumla församling
Historical Region: Gotlands södra härad, Stenkumla ting, Gotlands län
Font Location in Church: Located inside the church, at the W end of the nave, opposite the S doorway
Date: ca. 1150s?
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Byzantios
Church Notes: a faint Latin inscription near the triumphal arch records that the church was inaugurated 1 September 1287 in honor of the Virgin Mary and St. Michael; church abandoned 1868; restored 1917; renovated 1951; 15thC Passiomnmaster interior paintings;
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 42, 44, 47) as an octagonal mounted font dated to the mid-12th century from the workshop of the Byzantios master. Each of the basin sides has a round arch resting on very short columns, under which a scene is represented: 1)Annunciation; 2)zoomachia; 3)human figure and patriarchal cross; 4)centaur; 5)Spinario; 6)griffin and rider; 7)zoomachia; 8)zoomachia. The stem of the base has four protruding heads at 90-degree angles. In Stenström (1975). In Nordström (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910809F4] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Byzantios, painted in the 1780s with thick oil paint of bright colours. On-site notes: richly re-painted, in the late 18th century, showing many details that probably were not there in the original paint. Nordström (1984) is correct in identifying the Annunciation to Mary, but his suggestion that there was also a Visitation scene is not. Two plinths have been added to the lower base of the font; the upper plinth is shaped to conform with the shape of base; the lower plinth extends outward beyond the font and has a circular plate cut in it to hold the water as it drained out; this has since been plugged [i.e., the hole in the lower base]. The font is now [1997, 2002, 2012] located at the west end of the nave; it shows in early KMB photographs [ca. 1900, 1939] right in the southwest corner of the nave, west of the south entranceway.
