Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 150, 152) as an sandstone octagonal mounted baptismal font from the Byzantios workshop and dated circa 1150 by Roosval (ibid.); basin sides ornamented with arcade of round arches resting on low columns; each arch contains a scene of the Childhood or Passion of Christ, Samson, animals, etc. Roosval (1918) identifies the scene on the east side as the Nativity [cf. Images area]. Round pedestal base with four heads at 90-degree angles; round lower base with several mouldings. Described and illustrated also in Fåhraeus (1974). In Stenström (1975). In Nordström (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910810F2] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century bt Byzantios. On-site notes: the pictorial program on this font proceeds from the right to the left. The font is in good condition and has traces of paint all over it. Well-designed and proportioned font and skillfully carved. Older plinth has similar traces of paint and colourings as the font; it is difficult to tell what date it is, perhaps the 16th century. There is no drainage evident on the plinth, even though there is a hole in the bowl of the font; this probably means that the font once stood directly on the floor of the church and the plinth was added later [cf. supra]. The interior of the basin appears to have been re-carved at two opposite spots, a modification possibly related to the font cover? [cf. Image section for full iconographic program]
