Scene Description: The Virgin stands to the left, in profile next to the altar. On the altar is a cross over a chalice. The Virgin (or maybe Simeon?) has raised hands. The figure is haloed and wears a robe tied with a knotted robe. It has long hair perhaps braids which fall down the back. It looks like a female figure.

There is however, one scene on the bowl of the Virgin standing in front of an altar (Etimasia?) with a chalice and cross above it. Between the three heads of the beasts and one man, as is typical of the Byzantios workshop, the four motifs for the four apostles are carved. -- painted font

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (1925- ) as a sandstone octagonal mounted baptismal font; identified as a work of the Byzantios group and dated to the latter half of the 12th century by Roosval (1918). The same source shows the original foundation of the font in the Romanesque floor. An arcade of round arches resting on low columns appears all around the basin; inside arches, the following motifs, each corresponding to a side of the basin: haloed person on the left points both hands to an altar on the right; on the altar there is a chalice, a Maltese cross above the chalice; Tree of Life; haloed lion (Mark's symbol?); griffin (Christ symbol?); Tree of Life; stag eating from a tree; lion (Christ's symbol?); Agnus Dei with labarum, facing left. The plain thick ring moulding of the upper base has a large square opening for the lateral drainage of the basin; below it, four heads at 90-degree angles (two human, one ram, one lion); on the sides, between the corner heads, are the symbols of the four Evangelists holding scrolls, each encircled; the lower base is cylindrical and plain. The font is raised on two other plinths. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910822F2] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the seconf half of the 12th century by Byzantios. On-site notes: the upper rim of the basin is round but the rest of the basin is octagonal; the painted font is in fair condition; the figural scene on the basin may represent the Virgin in front of the altar (Etimasia). As noted above, the font was shown standing on a single plinth on the old floor, without the larger modern plinth; the photograph in Roosval (1918) shows the font located next to a wall, not as it is now, in the centre of the nave.
