In Roosval (1918) with date 1166 [cf. infra]. Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III) as a composite font of two parts, basin and base, from different periods: the sandstone base is the usual round pedestal ornamented with four protruding heads, a work attributable to the Byzantios' workshop and dated to 1166 by Roosval [cf. infra for challenged dating]. The basin, however, is dated to the 14th century and a product of the "Fröjelgruppen" [=Fröjel group"] of works exported from Gotland to Scania, the current Danish territory, and other northen destinations (Germany, Estonia, etc.); it is a polygonal basin, its eight (?) sides divided by nail-head bands and ornamented with fabulous animals. A plain flat wooden lid covers the basin. The basin is described and illustrated also in Kjellin (1925). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910504F1] agrees with the SK attribution [cf. supra]: "åttasidig cuppa ur Fröjelgruppen medan foten ursprungligen tillhört en Byzantiosfunt från 1100-talets andra hälft ". On-site notes: in our opinion Roosval's dating of the base is too early, as are most of his datings of the Byzantios' works; the basin has a nail-head edging around the bowl and also strange-looking creatures; the base by Byzantios is typical of his workshop; the basin, however, is not; there is a removable metal (copper?) lining mounted on a wooden frame that is inserted into the stone basin; it has no drain, and there is no draing hole in the stone basin either; there is an open section in the centre-ring section of the base that may have been used as part of the drainage system of the earlier basin. The font's northeast and north sides are very difficult to access, as the font is located against the north side of the chancel arch and the northeast side is almost flush against the west end of the choirstalls. The fanciful animals carved on the basin sides are done in pairs, facing each other; some have horns, some do not; some have elaborate tongues sticking out, others do not; they may represent real animals, perhaps lions, horses and mountain goats of some sort, given the long horns on the horned ones; their tails resemble acanthus plants.
