B03: New Testament - Childhood and youth of Christ - Annunciation to Zacharias or Old Testament - Samson's Mother?
Scene Description: on the north side of the basin -- This might be the prophesy to Zacharias. A man is standing to the right of an angel. His hands are actively engaged in discussion. The Angel, to the left, is haloed and two winged. With his right hand he points to the man. This carving gesture/style is very much like that seen in Ottonian mss illuminations. Check this out - and in fact the wings too have the same animated appearance. Perhaps Byzantios is more Westphalian than Eastern.

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 210ff) as an octagonal mounted sandstone baptismal font, attributed to the Byzantios workshop and dated by Roosval to the mid-12th century; the basin sides are ornamented with a an arcade of round arches resting on very short columns, like the other Byzantios fonts; in each arch, a scene of the childhood of Christ, Passion (Crucifixion), zoomachia, Samson, etc. Round pedestal base has four protruding heads, with remains of painted crosses on the sides between. The same source (ibid., pl. 240 on p. 216) shows a 1904 photograph showing the font on a beautiful grave-slab that commemorated the death of Bodvid / Botvid, vicar from Haltarve, who died in 1499. In Roosval (1918). In Stenström (1975). In Nordström (1984) [cf. infra]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910809F3] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by Byzantios; the SHM notes that the metal lining of the basin is made of copper, a later addition, and makes it impossible to learn whether there is a drain hole in the stone or not. On-line notes: doubtful identification in Nordström (1984) of a scene with a man and an angel as the Annunciation; it appears to depict a man who is approached by, and in discussion with, the angel Gabriel; this is then followed by the Annunciation. The pictorial narrative -what there is left of it- moves from the left to the right, unlike Alskog and Tofta. The basin is rounded at the very top, but octagonal immediately below. The basin is lined with metal [cf. supra]. The lower plinth is a later addition. No cover present.
