Font ID: 00017ATL
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Date Visited: 1997-05-23; 2023-06-02
Font Date: ca. 1150?
Font Century and Period/Style: 12th - 13th century, Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Byzantios
Church / Chapel Name: Atlingbo kyrka
Font Location in Church: The font was moved from its original location, and is now situated on the north side just west of the chancel arch, at the E end of the nave, N side
Church Notes: The church is fairly large with a single nave and ornately scalloped south door. No wall murals remain inside it.
Church Address: Eskelhem Pråstgården 181, 622 70 Gotlands Tofta, Sweden -- Tel.: +46 498 26 65 25
Site Location: Gotland, Gotlands län, Sweden, Europe
Directions to Site: Located about 18 km ESE of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift
Historical Region: Stenkumla ting, Gotlands län
Additional Comments: The base consists of two parts, therefore there are three parts to this font; the upper bowl, the centre ring, and lastly, the lower part of the base. This is unusual and probably means that the base was damaged and combined with the ring from another font. The style of the Byzantios fonts is so consistent that it is difficult to say if the base is any different. . Under the lower part of the base is a modern square, rounded corner lower base; the font stands on a modern plinth, a polished slab of granite. -- Painted font: traces of several colours on it

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. III: 117) as a sandstone polygonal mounted font of the Byzantios workshop and dated to the mid-1100s (with reference to Roosval's Steinmaster..., p. 116, as source); the basin has an arcade of round arches, each arch on the basin panel containing a scene or motif. The base has four protruding heads at 90-degree angles and motifs between the heads; the lower base is square. Font cover -probably of the 13th century (?)- matching the contour of the upper basin and building-like with un upper turret (this cover was listed in the 1587 inventory). Described and illustrated in Fåhraeus (1974) and Nordström (1984). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910812F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone by Byzantios in the second half of the 12th century. On-site notes: Nordström's identification is incorrect: there is no Annunciation scene on this font, nor is there a Visitation scene either; the font includes three of the Evangelists's symbols (Matthew, Mark and Luke), but not John's [cf. ImagesArea for a full description of the programme]. There is currently [1997 and 2012] no lid on the font, although the font appears with one on in the SK: Gotland photo of the interior ca. 1942 (SK: G., Bd. IIII, pl. 133 on p. 119); is this lid kept elsewhere within the church? The font is in good condition and has been cleaned. It is made of three blocks (the centre ring is a separate piece) and a modern lower base. There are traces of several colours of paint on it. NB: the basin of this font has nine sides, not the usual eight; also, the base is in several parts and may have been damaged and made up mixing it with parts from other fonts - [cf. Images section for the full iconographic program]
