B07: Apostle or saint - St. Mary Magdalene and St.Margaret of Antioch? - with dragon?

Scene Description: on the south side of the basin [orientation is approximate] -- In this arch there are two standing figures in the centre, a rampant(?) quadruped animal to the right. The figure on the extreme left, stands frontal; her face is surrounded by a high collar - by a hanging medallian around her neck; her right arm, bent at the elbow, holds a small cross to its chest - the the right side; the left arm also bent at the elbow, holds something else to the centre - holds a ball. The other figure, frontal, head surrounded by pleated frill or collar, broach hanging from its neck; both arms are bent at the elbows, forearms against the chest, the palms are forward, the thumbs hold the baby fingers down - an odd gesture but very specific; as with the previous figure, the mantle folds are elaborate and pleated over the front. To the right of the two figures is a four-legged animal , a dog in a rampant/vertical position - lying down? Facing left to the centre of the compositon; given Hegwald's disinterest in the accurate representation of anatomies, is it Margaret's dragon?

INFORMATION

FontID: 00016HAL
Church/Chapel: Halla kyrka
Church Location: Halla kyrka, 622 54 Romakloster, Sweden
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Gotland, Gotllands län
Directions to Site: Located off local road I596, N of county road 143, just E of Roma, towards the centre of the island, about 20 km SE of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift
Historical Region: Gotlands norra härad, Halla ting, Gotlands norra härad
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, at the N side of the chancel, just W of the altar
Date: ca. 1120?
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Hegvald / Hegwald / Hegwald Posthumous [Roosval]
Cognate Fonts: the font at Ganthem [cf. FontNotes]
Church Notes: nave originally 13thC; the rest is 14thC; Halla Church is small but very well endowed, including late-Gothic mural paintings; restored 1967
Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (1927- ) as a sandstone cylindrical mounted baptismal font from the Hegwald workshop and dated by Roosval originally to ca. 1120, the same date he had assigned to the chancel, which he thought was also Hegwald's work; Roosval later revised his datings to a later period towards the end of the 12th or first quarter of the 13th century. This font has a similar distribution of the iconography to the Ganthem font: the basin sides contain scenes of the Childhood of Christ, the Miracle of the Corn/Harvest, etc. The underbowl scenes are also related to those on the Ganthem font: Herod and the Magi, etc. Equally, the round pedestal base is ornamented with four protruding animal heads with prey in their mouths, while the spaces between the heads have other themes. In Roosval (1918). In Lunndberg (1937). In Alhem (1959), In Stenström (1975). In Svanberg (1995). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910508F3] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the mid-12th century by Hegvald; the SHM entry remarks that, despite a missing head from the base and some general weathering, this is one of the best preserved works by Hegvald. On-site notes: this font is in very good condition and therefore is very helpful in identifying the scenes on the Ganthem font also by Hegvald: there are seven arches around the sides of the bowl - very large and round arches; double columns and ornated spandrels with seraphim; there are seven arches with scenes under the bowl, and four carved scenes between the four beasts on the base. The pictorial program [cf. ImagesArea for a full description of the scenes] appears to move from left to right. The four beasts of the base hold either humans or animals in their mouths. The plinth is round at one end and square at the other end, against the wall. This must be the original one, since there is a trough carved and a dish into the plinth to allow for water drainage. No cover present now but a wooden cover of simple functional design appears in an early photograph [cf. ImagesArea] by Olof Sörling (1852-1927).
