Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. IV, hft. 3: 341-345) as a cylindrical mounted sandstone baptismal font, identified as "Hegwaldr Posthumus" and dated to ca. 1140 by Roosval; the base is dated to the 13th century; the sides of the basin and the underbowl are ornamented with an arcade each; in the round arches of the basin sides are found scenes of the childhood of Christ (Annunciation, Visitation) and others (the raising of Lazarus, Christy in Majesty); on the underbowl, Madonna and Child, John the Baptist and Herod, Adoration of the Magi. In Roosval (1918), Lundberg (1937) and Stenström (1975). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910811F3] as the basin of a baptismal font made of sandstone in the mid-12th centurt by Hegvald; the base, also medieval, is not the original; re-painted in a dark green wash. On-site notes: the basin is worn and badly chipped at places; it is ornamented with scenes around the sides of the bowl and on the underside; the basin sides includw L-->R: SE: two crowned figures point to star; E: 2 long-haired women grieving; NE: deceased figure in a coffin, Hand of God, Lazarus?; N: resurrection of Lazarus by crowned figure; NW: two women walk toward Lazarus; W: angel and female figures; SW: two female figures; S: two female figures embracing. The underbowl, which inludes a horse rider is very difficult to pjotograph. The conical base was a later, 13th-century, addition, very much in the style found under Paradise basins, with a ring moulding at the top of the stem; no record of the original base, although it should have looked much like the one at nearby Sjonhem; there is no plinth. No cover present. A mid-18th century [1737] font of the baluster-pedestal painted type exists also in this church [not listed in this Index]. [NB: the font has been placed very close to the pews, so its present west sides are very difficult to view and photograph]. The statue of the Madonna is a copy [original at the SHM]
