B01: New Testament - Childhood and youth of Christ - Nativity

Scene Description: In the centre, lower part, Mary reclined in bed; her head stands at 90* angle to her body, her left arm bent at elbow 90* degree, palm extended; head is covered and haloed; the bed has two manifolds, richly adorned. To the left of the bed is a figure, half sitting or leaning on the arch, haloed, in profile, has crossed wings - the left hand holds the wrist of the right hand (gesture of sorrow). Above the bed, the figure of Jesus, with a two-layered cape-like blanket which appears to be held by the figure to the right of the scene and bed; this figure is in profile (Joseph?) haloed. In the SPANDREL to the left of the scene - a seraphim (four wings) whose right hand points with index finger to the right, while the left hand holds one of his entangled wings to the left and the head is horizontal with chin facing to the left. He is haloed. [NB: the larger hole in the stone between Mary and Child may have had a function, as it lies right below the gap in the carving of the arch right above -- it is not known whether it was related to the font cover fastenings].

Scene Description: Gabriel sitting/leaning to the right on some sort of furniture (stool). Mary stands to the left, full frontal, the right arm straight down and bent at the elbow, palm outward, she has a long sleeved cuff over the regular sleeve. The left arm down to the elbow and bent upward, pointing diagonally, palm outward, thumb catching the index finger, the other three stretched out. She wears a head cover and ruffles around the neck. The right hand holds an open scroll hanging to the floor and the left hand raised in benediction. Between them is the hand of god - two fingers in benediction gesture. In the SPANDREL between the Annunciation and the next scene the Nativity (to the left) is an angel, wings open, head bent to the side at a very awkward angle - the right hand comes down and holds the forearm of the left hand that comes pointed upward with figures extended - a gesture of grief. -- Photographed in June 1997

Scene Description: The Adoration scene is spread over two arches, this one and the next to the right. Two crowned figures appear in this arch, both passant, bodies in profile; the figure in front has the head tilted diagonally, a tight fit against the curve of the arch; right arm raised holding a gift; left arm wraps around the waist holding the cape and carrying a long staff; long cape with large sleeves. The figure behind dressed equally in a long rich cape; also crowned, the head also a tight fit against the curve of the arch; the right arm holds up a gift wrapped in a long cloth; the left arm holding a staff. In the SPANDREL there is an angel with two wings upward. -- . In the SPANDREL between the two arches, 4-winged seraphim., head horizontal, looking downward, chin to the left.

Scene Description: This arch contains three figures, on the right the Madonna and Child. Madonna is full frontal, haloed, she wears a rosette medallion, the right arm is raised to shoulder level and holds an acanthus branch; the long sleeve hangs almost to the ground; the Child, clearly not a baby, sits on her left knee, the lower part of her mantle wraps around his body from the waist down; he is bare footed. His arms are extended ac ross Mary's body,the right arm points with two fingers to the Magus; the left arm holds a small cross; the Child is crowned; he is not haloed. The Magus on the left in profile, the head full frontal, crowned, with ribbons from the crown, bearded; he wears a gown to his feet and a cape and mantle with a clasp; his right hand holds up an object, a gift; his left arm comes around the front and holds a long staff which ends in a tri-lobed acanthus motif [cf. Index entry for the Aakirkeby font]

Scene Description: The centre lower part is occupied by a table, which is draped; on it are three chalice-like cups, three round objects, and etc. Two figures above the table - the figure on the right is crowned and bearded, the head on a horizontal plain, chin to the right; the left hand holds a sword pointing upward, the right arm rests on the table parallel to the ground, fingers extended. To his left and behind him, a crowned figure (female?); the right hand is raised to her upper chest holding an object which might be a knife; her left hand is between the arm and the chest of the figure to her right. On the far right is a smaller figure, facing to the left, the head is in profile and it has a halo; the right arm points downward and palm extended outward; the left arm across his body and points with extended figures crossing the other one. On the extreme left of the composition, a plant or short tree on which stands a bird, two wings open, head raised, and beak opened upward diagonally. In the SPANDREL TO THE LEFT contains a head, facing frontward, two arms raised to the sides of the head and hold a knotted cloth above its head. The arch over the scene also has a head with its tongue protruding.

B06: Old Testament - conflated scene of Cain and Abel and Annunciation to the Shepherds or John the Baptist?

Scene Description: At the right side is a figure on bended knees, in profile, the head on a horizontal plain, chin to the right, long headed and bearded, the right arm straight down and bent up at the elbow and index finger pointing vertically up; the right arm wraps around the body to the front, and holds something like a sledge hammer. To the left and centre there is a manger or cage, with four compartments, the frame is made of entwined branches, each pen contains an animal. Above the cage, a figure with the head on a horizontal plain, the right hand holds a sword pointed to the left and parallel to the ground, the left hand holds a severed head by the hair. The arch is adorned by a horizontal head, chin to the left and tongue protrudes. In the SPANDREL an angel, caped, full frontal, head is profile, looking diagonally to the left.

Scene Description: Below the Annunciation, on the underbowl, is the Flight to Egypt. This scene takes place over two arches.the underside moves from the left to the right. In the first arch is the Madonna and Child on the horse. The second arch shows Joseph leading them and going toward the right. The horse faces right, on it the Virgin and Child. Mary, head in profile, facing right, head is crowned and not haloed, she wears a ruffle around the neck and the medallion rosetta from her neck. The left arm diagonally upward,holds a cross. The right hand holds the child. The child is crowned with ribbons, head and body in profile, and holds something round. The horse's tail is knotted. One rein of the horse cuts across to the next arch on the right and is being held in Joseph's right elbow. Joseph stands and walks in profile, head slightly bent down, the right hand holds a staff over his right shoulder from the staff hangs the saddle bags. The left hand points diagonally up with two fingers extended. The Adoration of the Magi is above the arch containing Joseph.

Cognate Fonts: The ornamental pattern is -as L. Karsson has indicated- very similar to that on the fonts at Gällstad, Fröslunda and Vaage. The pattern is also found on the Röen font.

Church Notes: The church is of double-nave design with a central pillar between the western tower and chancel. It has an ornate rood in the eastern archway.

Noted and illustrated in Roosval (1918). Described in Sveriges Kyror: Gotland (1925- , Bd, VI, hft. 2: 138ff, 165, 166): "baptismal font from the latter half of the twelfth century [...] with expressive reliefs on the bowl and foot [...]. Vividly depicted scenes illustrate episodes from the childhood of Christ and the legend of St Stephen. One scene depicts the legend of the broiled cock which flew up crowing 'Kristus natus est', to the astonishment of King Herod [...]. The font in Stånga church is one of the finest works of the master who, from an inscription in Etelhem Church, has been given the pseudonym 'Hegvald'; he was active towards the end of the twelfth century." In Stenström (1975). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910822F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the mid-12th century by Hegvald, with many traces of coloured paints. Kroesen & Steensma (2004) describe it as "also by Hegvaldr and dating to the twelfth century, and [...] closely related to that at Vänge." On-site notes: the font is in excellent condition; it was once painted a dark red, with yellow still evident on the base; main scenes on the basin are L-->R: N: Annunciation; NW+W: Adoration of the Magi; SW: St. Stephen and the crowing cockerel; S: Massacre of the Innocent; SE+E+NE: Nativity with the weightless child; note also all the figures in the spandrels characteristic to Hegvald. On the underbowl the programme includes, starting on the N side L-->R: Flight to Egypt and Miracle of the Harvest; two crowned figures in an arch holding a scroll; 2 saints(?) in an arch holding a cloth; Massacre of the Innocent. On the base are four heads: one human, three animal with prey, a band of foliage and a painted inscription on the lower base. There is no plinth. No cover present. Dating of the font in most sources is probably too early; the head of the woman on the base alone suggests a later date. [cf. Image section for full iconographic program]
