Font ID: 00002LAU
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Date Visited: 1997-05-30; 2023-05-30
Font Date: ca. 1200-
Font Century and Period/Style: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Sighraf / Sighrafr / Sigraf
Cognate Fonts: a somewhat smilar base on the font at Knivsta
Church / Chapel Name: Lau kyrka
Font Location in Church: In the centre of the large, four columned nave, towards the W end
Church Notes: early-13thC church; may have been raised on the remains of an earlier building; the church is one of the largest parish churches on the island. It is stark and very open. It has a large rood, gothic altarpiece, and ornate wrought iron candelabra. On the western end of the church there is a large wall mural of the Trinity, 14-15th c.?.
Church Address: 623 62 Lau, Gotland, Sweden
Site Location: Gotland, Gotlands län, Sweden, Europe
Directions to Site: Located at the I536 and I548 crossroads, S of county road 144, on the SE side of the island, about 35 km ENE of Burgsvik, 40-45 km ESE of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Visby stift -- När-Lau församling
Historical Region: Gotlands södra härad, Burs ting, Gotlands län
Additional Comments: Damaged font / recycled font [see Font notes for details] -- There are four base figures, as is typical on Sighraf bases. The Madonna and Child, St. Peter, a Bishop and lastly, from left to right, Father Abraham. There is no evidence that scenes or motives once ornamented the sides of the base, however, it probably did. This makes me wonder if the base was originally part of the font. If not, it would explain the different styles evident betweent the bowl and base. The pictorial program proceeds from the left to the right. Two large round plinths are under the font. There is no evidence of drainage on either. [Lau site re-visited 1 June 2018 with attendants to the Kyrkoseminariet and 30 May 2023]

Noted in Roosval (1918). Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. VI, hft. 7: 629-632, 654): "the font dates from about 1200, and has been attributed to the workshop of Master Sigraf." This same source reports a limestone object found in the churchyard (ibid.); it is round with a large hole in the centre and measures 72 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height; it is suggested that it may have been the base of another font. Noted in Stenström(1975). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910819F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the last quarter of the 12th century by Sigraf. On-site notes: the font stands on two plinths; the upper basin is badly worn [many years spent in the churchyard, exposed to the elements], but it is still possible to discern most of the images that make up the scenes: Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Flight to Egypt, Last Supper, Flagellation and Crucifixion. The stem of the base has retained its fine carving lines, unlike the basin [is this the original base? if it is not, it would explain the different styles evident between the bowl and base, as well as the obvious miss-match with the round plinth]. The figures on the corners of the base are: Madonna and Child, St. Peter, a Bishop and Abraham; a thick rope moulding adorns the upper part of the base. The pictorial program proceeds from left to right. Two large round plinths are under the font; there is no evidence of drainage on either of them. The different parts of the font appear to be of different stones, limestone and sandstone.
