Scene Description: [orientation is approximate] -- showing most of the previous scene, the Flight to Egypt, on the left - in the centre is a fortress with a castellated top and a round-arch headed doorway with a closed door; there is a rectangular open door on the left; both doors show complex ornamental ironwork; the surface of the building wall is patterned to show its construction, large stones at the bottom, smaller ones towards the top - at the extreme right is part of the next scene, the Baptism of Christ

Scene Description: [orientation is approximate] -- on the left is the castellated fortress - in the centre, the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan: John the Baptist stands on a ledge on the left, wearing a long garment and a plain halo; his right hand directly on Christ's head; a much shorter Christ stands naked in the centre, facing full frontal, his hands open with palms forward; cruciferous halo; he shows no sex now, although he displays a vagina-like cut between his legs, probably a later re-carving; one of his legs is damamged at knee height; Christ stands in the gap between the two ledges and the usual symbol for the water is not present; a robed figure with a radiated halo stands on the ledge to the right holding Christs garments in his hands; it is not an angel; above Christ, between the heads of the two other figures is a rounded bulge, probably meant to symbolise a cloud, with a star in the shape of an eight-petalled flower, much like the one in the scene of the Magi - at the extreme right of the image is the angel of the Annunciation scene.

Scene Description: [orientation is approximate] -- at the extreme left is the seated Madonna and Child belonging to the previous scene - in the centre, the Flight to Egypt: the Madonna and Child ride a richly dressed horse; the Madonna faces full frontal and wears a radiated halo, holding the Child with both hands; Christ Child facing the right and wearing a cruciferous halo - Joseph in passant-regardant pose (his body facing right but his head turned left) and holding the horse's bridle in his right hand; he wears rich garments and very pointy shoes; his left hand holds a pointed stick {lance?) from which hang his saddle-bags - at the extreme right is a castellated building with an open door, the door showing the characteristic ironwork of Gotland church doors

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (1925-... : Bd. IX, hft. 2) as "a most remarkable baptismal font of grey sandstone [...]. The cylindrical bowl has a draining hole and is adorned with sculptured scenes from the childhood of Christ: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the First Bath of Jesus, the Adoration of the Magi, the Flight into Egypt, and Jesus' Baptism in the Jordan. The square foot has protruding corner figures [...]: Virgin and Child, Holy Bishop, Bosom of Abraham, and St Peter. The font has been attributed to the workshop of the master-carver Sighraf and is usually dated to the late 12th century or c. 1200" in Tynell (1913), Roosval (1918), Stenström (1975), Nordström (1984) and Svanberg (1995). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910821F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the last quarter of the 12th century by Sighraf. On-site notes: the centre ring is very worn and it now appears totally plain. There is no plinth beneath the font; it sits directly on the wooden floor of the church. Two lid staple holes in the upper bowl surface, to the right of the baptism scene [cf. Images section for the full iconographic programme]. No cover present. This church has a second baptismal font, also of grey sandstone; it is painted and dates from 1716 [later font not listed separately in this Index, but photographs and measurements were taken on site [cf. digital image of on-site notes].
